Dr. Miriam Diamond

Miriam L. Diamond is a professor in the Department of Earth Sciences and School of the Environment at the University of Toronto, with cross-appointments to the Department of Chemical Engineering and Applied Chemistry, the Dalla Lana School of Public Health, Department of Geography, and the Physical and Environmental Sciences Program at Scarborough College.

Prof. Diamond’s research investigates chemical contaminants, including microplastics, from sources through to human and ecological exposure, with translation into preventative measures. She is also deeply involved in chemicals management efforts from research to practice in national to international arenas. Her research has been published in over 250 peer-reviewed articles and chapters, in addition to receiving media attention.

In 2017, Miriam was chosen to represent University of Toronto researchers during Foreign Affairs Minister (and local MP) Chrystia Freeland's announcement of $52.6 million in funding for the University of Toronto. Read the full story here.
Diamond is the Associate Chair of Department of Earth Sciences and former Associate Editor of the journal Environmental Science and Technology. She is Vice-Chair of the International Panel on Chemical Pollution, is a member of the Scientific and Technical Panel of the Global Environment Facility and is an Earth Commissioner under the work of the Global Commons Alliance. Diamond is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada, Royal Canadian Geographical Society, and the Society of Environmental Toxicology and Chemistry. She was the co-chair of the Canadian Chemical Management Plan Science Committee from 2017 to 2021.

She received her Doctorate in Chemical Engineering and Applied Chemistry from University of Toronto, a Master's of Mining Engineering from Queen's University (Canada), a Master's in zoology from University of Alberta and a Bachelor's degree in biology from University of Toronto.
